I recently finished my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.   Throughout my coursework, I completed 24 intensive courses dealing with all types of issues that a person and family experience in their journey of life.

One of those issues for many families involves helping children with Special Needs.   This includes the diagnosis of Autism, Aspergers, AD and ADHD.   A close friend of mine is a Pediatrician.  She recently told me that one of the most difficult things people in her profession she has to do is to tell a parent that their children has one of these diagnosis'.   In the past, there has been very little support to help parent cope with this information and be able to provide proper care, love, nurturing and education for their child and the family.

There are many theories which pretend to improve a child's behavior; in my experience of 40 years working will all types of children, including special needs, Music and Art work are crucial components which are imperative in attempting to work with these precious children.   Sadly, most current theories never address the core issues, that being, how can we help a child communicate in ways that are meaningful to them, how they are feeling and make emotional connections.   All of the stats and trials children are put through have little or no change in their long term ability to communicate with others.

Music, such as the Piano or Drums, gives a child a 'tool' to communicate their feelings and emotions, especially for children that are either non-verbal or have limited verbal skills.   Drawing, art work is also extremely important to introduce to each child.   I have witnessed wonderful changes in a child's behavior which includes laughter, giggling, smiles, visible relief in their face and body, both from Music and Art work.   Children deserve to feel Joyful.

Piano Lessons are great keeping enhancing the brain and increases processing,   A nurse friend of mine is also a Jazz Pianist.   She reminded me that playing the piano is one of the few things we can do where we use our right brain and left brain at the same time.   Analytical and creative sides of the brain.   I read once that there are 15,000 brain connections which fire off to play an average one page piano piece.    The chart below gives greater detail which you may find useful.  (you may want to print and enlarge it.  Source:  Pinterest / Encore Music)

Piano Lessons are GOOD for the BRAIN!

Any form of therapy which is lacking Music and Art I would never recommend.   Below you will find several videos which show the work of many Music Therapists and Art Therapists who realize the benefit of incorporating and encouraging creativity.   Music and the choice of slower calming music can cause a child (or adult) to slow down and relax.

One of my previous clients refused to medicate their children and hired myself to assist with bringing Music Therapy into their home. The choice of what Music and Videos and Computer games a child uses and is exposed to is a huge issue.   Children who watch violent movies are going to end up acting out what they see and hear.   They will have sleepless, scary nights.

A better choice is to avoid all movies, computer games including Mine Craft and others, and deliberately structure a child's day to include relaxing, and calming music coupled with some type of sensory activity, including drawing and touch.  The effective choices vary from child to child.

Many children on the spectrum are extremely talented and all they need is a caring, intuitive therapist to work with them on a one to one basis.  The results are usually outstanding and impressive.

I am sure you have some questions.   Feel free to call my studio anytime or email me.   I would be excited to explore with you how Music and Art work will enhance your entire family life.   You deserve to explore every way possible to improve the quality of your child's life.   Being able to express their feelings and emotions through Music and Art work are a perfect solution.

Every Child Deserves a Music and Art Education.
